Rita Goudeket

Rita Goudeket was in kindergarten of the Sixth Montessori School together with Anne Frank.

Rita Emily Goudeket was the only child of Maurits (Mau) Goudeket and Rebecca (Bep) Neeter.[1] Her father was head bookkeeping at a trading company.[2]

Rita was entered in the register of Prepatory School No 51 on 21 May 1935.[3] In the 1935 preschool photo class Anne listed her as number 12.[4] She is the girl in the centre at the very front. Together with Jaap de Leeuw, Ans Bossen, Renée Weber and  Betty Polk, Rita is also in a 1940 photo, taken outside Sixth Montessori School.[1] Due to the anti-Jewish measures, she transferred to the Jewish Montessori School on 27 September 1941.[5]

On Sunday 20 June 1943, a large razzia took place in Amsterdam-Zuid and in a part of Amsterdam-Oost, rounding up the last remaining Jews in the city. A total of more than 5,500 Jews were taken into custody, all of whom were sent to Camp Westerbork.[6] Among them Rita, her parents, and her grandmother, who lived in their neighbourhood. After spending over a week in Westerbork, Rita and her parents were deported on the morning of 29 June in a long freight train to Sobibor extermination camp. Aboard this sixteenth transport to Sobibor were 2,397 people - men, women and children - none of whom would survive the death camp.[7] Rita, her father and mother were gassed immediately upon arrival on 2 July 1943. Grandmother Rika met with the same fate a week later.[8]
