The magazine was published in Germany between <strong>1940</strong> and <strong>1945</strong>, but was also distributed in surrounding countries.<sup data-footnote-id=\"y63xl\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Because of the poor reputation of the German press, the head of the <em>Verwaltungsamt der NS-Presse </em>wanted to publish a magazine that would have the stature of <em>The Observer</em>. He secured an exemption from the mandatory propaganda notes and <em>Tagesparole</em>, which gave German magazines their uniform stature.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Theodor Heuss and Max Planck, among others, seized the opportunity to publish pieces under comparatively liberal editors in which they did not have to include obligatory National Socialist phrases. But that certainly did not make it an anti-Nazi magazine.
