"description": "<p>Hermann van Pels had worked in the food industry since he was 20 years old. He ran an import-export firm with his brother Max and was a representative at his father's butchery supplies business. After coming to the Netherlands, he remained active primarily in that industry.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Nevertheless, a few months after his arrival, he started a business trading in textiles and knitted goods with his brother-in-law Max Goldschmidt. The business was called Moderna and was located at Goldschmidt's residential address. After more than a year, Hermann van Pels withdrew from Moderna and Goldschmidt continued the business alone.<sup data-footnote-id=\"anzrz\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Van Pels returned to his old profession; he was listed with the municipality as a 'merchant/butcher's waste (casings etc)'.<sup data-footnote-id=\"0gn6u\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup> After the establishment of Pectacon, he joined the company around <strong>1939</strong>. According to Otto Frank, he was through his financial reserves by then, but earned enough to rent a nice house and live a good life.<sup data-footnote-id=\"981yc\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup> Towards the end of <strong>1940</strong>, Pectacon moved to Prinsengracht and had the space it needed to grow. "description_nl": "<p>Hermann van Pels werkte sinds zijn twintigste in levensmiddelenbranche. Hij had met zijn broer Max een import-exportfirma en was vertegenwoordiger bij de zaak in slagerijbenodigdheden van zijn vader. Na zijn komst in Nederland bleef hij vooral in die branche actief.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Desondanks startte hij enkele maanden na zijn komst met zijn zwager Max Goldschmidt een handel in textielproducten en gebreide goederen. De zaak heette Moderna en was gevestigd op het woonadres van Goldschmidt. Na ruim een jaar trok Hermann van Pels zich uit Moderna terug en Goldschmidt zette de zaak alleen voort.<sup data-footnote-id=\"anzrz\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Van Pels keerde terug naar zijn oude beroep; bij de gemeente stond hij genoteerd als <em>koopman i/slagersafval (darmen enz)</em>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"0gn6u\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup> Na de oprichting van Pectacon trad hij omstreeks <strong>1939</strong> in dienst. Volgens Otto Frank was hij toen door zijn financiele reserves heen, maar verdiende hij genoeg om een mooie woning te huren en een goed leven te leiden.<sup data-footnote-id=\"981yc\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup> Tegen het einde van <strong>1940</strong> verhuisde Pectacon naar de Prinsengracht en beschikte daar over de ruimte die nodig was om te groeien.
