Formation La Synthèse

La Synthèse was founded when Pectacon, one of Otto Frank's companies, was in danger of being liquidated due to aryanisation measures.

One of the goals of the German occupation policy was to deprive Dutch Jews of their property. An initial impetus was given on 22 October 1940 with the promulgation of regulation VO 189/1940. This regulation required Jewish companies to register with the Wirtschaftsprufstelle,[1] which decided on the confiscation or liquidation of these companies. In an effort to remove Pectacon, one of Otto Frank's trading companies, from German control, Victor Kugler and Jan Gies founded the firm La Synthèse as early as 23 October 1940.[2]

The objective and activities of this company were similar to those of Pectacon, "the trading in and manufacture of chemicals and foodstuffs." Registration in the Trade Register followed on 4 November 1940. The firm's address was: Eemnesserweg 56, Hilversum, [3] which was Kugler's home address. On 8 May 1941, the firm's name was changed to N.V. Handelsvereeniging Gies & Co[4] by order of the secretary-general of the ministery of Justice, who objected to La Synthèse. The new name was registered with the Trade Register on 19 August 1941.[2]
