Dutch premiere of the play 'The Diary of Anne Frank'

The premiere of 'The Diary of Anne Frank' took place in the presence of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard.

The originally American play The Diary of Anne Frank was also performed in many other countries, including the Netherlands. It premiered on 27 November 1956 in the Nieuwe De la Mar Theater, in the presence of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard.[1]

The play was performed by the Arnhem-based theatre group 'Theater'. It had been translated into Dutch by Antoinette Westerling and was directed by Karl Guttmann, with as cast:

  • Robert de Vries as Otto Frank,
  • Jenny van Maerlant as Edith Frank
  • Anne-Marie Heyligers as Margot Frank
  • Martine Crefcoeur as Anne Frank
  • Hans Tiemeijer as Mr. van Daan
  • Enny Mols-de Leeuwe as Petronella van Daan
  • Jules Croiset as Peter van Daan
  • Bernhard Droog as Mr. Dussel
  • John de Freese as Mr. Kraler
  • Mia Goossen as Miep Gies[2]

The play made a big impression in Germany as well, where more than two million people came to see it. The audience was often silent for minutes afterwards. The play contributed greatly to the diary's fame in Germany and many other countries.
