Stichting Nederlands Volksherstel
"The Stichting Nederlands Volksherstel (Dutch People's Restoration Foundation) owes its existence to the overwhelming scale of the problems surrounding the liberation, which none of the existing social charity organisations was able to cope with, and to the work ethic and drive of illegal care groups. They did most of the work in the preparations, after which their initiative was taken over in modified form by social charity organisations.'"[5]
Volksherstel was located in Amsterdam at Raamgracht 4. Social service officials, including Jan Gies, were temporarily seconded to the organisation. During May-June 1945, he was at Central Station for the reception of returnees. He then joined a sub-office at Hygieaplein.[6]
On 23 September 1946, the director of Volksherstel Amsterdam informed the director of the Municipal Service for Social Affairs that five civil servants, including Jan Gies, would transfer (i.e. return) to the latter service from 1 October 1946. He expressed his gratitude for having a "core of proven workers" temporarily at his disposal for his organisation .[7]
Stichting 1940 - 1945
"The purpose of the Foundation is to look after the [...] needs of persons [...] who during the occupation [...] contributed to the domestic resistance, [...], if after the cessation of hostilities in our country [...] they are in need of assistance. (...) Soon there was a widespread organisation, a federative collaboration of some 50 local and regional organisations."[8]
Jan Gies was an employee of Stichting 1940-1945 ('the 1940-1945 Foundation'), according to an identity card (no 96).[9]
