Otto and the typescript of Anne's diary

Anne Frank's diaries were retyped by her father himself. Those typescripts resulted in the publication of the first edition of The Secret Annex in 1947.

Anne's diaries were retyped in parts by Otto Frank himself to give to his friends to read, and to be translated for his family in Switzerland. When the idea of publishing the diary took hold, the typescripts were created, eventually resulting in the publication of the first edition on 25 June 1947.[1]

On 22 August 1945, Otto Frank writes to his mother: ' (...) Miep hat zufällig eine Alben [sic] retten können und auch Anne's Tagebucher. Ich habe jedoch noch nicht die Kraft darin zu lesen.'[2] Soon, however, he became engrossed in the diary as evidenced by a letter dated 26 September 1945 to his sister Leni: 'Was ich da lese ist unbeschreiblich aufregend u. doch lese ich. Ich kann es euch nicht schildern, ich bin auch nicht fertig mit Lesen und will alles erst durchgelesen haben, bevor ich Auszüge oder übersetzungen mache.' [3]

In November 1945, Otto Frank read from the manuscripts to friends who encouraged him to publish.[4] He first had the stories typed out, which he then had translated into German by Anneliese Schütz.[5] He did not want to keep passing around the fables and short stories, and did not want to pass around the diaries at all. [6]

By mid-November 1945, he had not finished copying the diaries and he was not quite sure what to do with some passages, for example about his marriage to Edith: ' (...) it is a disagreeable feeling to publish things against her mother- and I have to do it. (…) It keeps my brains busy every day.' [7] This first typescript created by Otto Frank has not survived.[8]

Otto Frank sent diary excerpts translated into German to relatives in Switzerland. [9]

Typescripts I and II

In the Otto Frank Archive there are two complete typescripts that have been referred to as Typescript I and II since the research for the scholarly edition.[10] Typescript I was compiled by Otto Frank on the basis of the loose sheets supplemented with fragments from diary A1, A2 and A3 (see the Manuscript entry). Some passages he deliberately left out: 'There are passages I can scrap f.i [for instance] what she thought about my marriage, her view on politics.'[7]

In Typescript I, linguistic and stylistic changes were made. As a result, Typescript II was created. Typescript II is the modified version of Typescript I and it was typed out by Isa Cauvern.[8] Annie and Jan Romein saw this second version.[8] Publisher Contact used Typescript II as the starting point for the first edition of the diary.[11] Typescript II was also the basis of the German translation by Anneliese Schütz.[12]
