Names of Auguste van Pels

Variations of Auguste van Pels' names.

Röttgen was Auguste's maiden name. After her marriage to Hermann van Pels, her surname became Van Pels-Röttgen.[1]

The name Auguste was sometimes shortened to Gusti.[2] [3] [4] According to a first cousin of Hermann van Pels, Auguste was also called Gockel.[5] Hermann van Pels, according to Anne, used the pet name 'Kerli ' for his wife.[6]

When Anne Frank wrote the second version (the B version) of her diary, she wrote a list of the names she wanted to give the people in a book to be published later. Auguste van Pels is listed on it as Petronella van Daan.[7] In the first edition of the diary (1947), that became Mrs van Daan and occasionally Petronella (van Daan) or Mrs.[8]
