Jan Wiegel
Jan Wiegel was one of the class mates of Anne Frank at Sixth Montessori School.
Jan Wiegel was a son of Johannes Wiegel and Alida Helena van Moorsel.[1] His father was an office clerk.[2] Jan Wiegel grew up in Amsterdam's Rivierenbuurt district. He was entered in the register of Prepatory School No. 51 on 2 October 1933.[3] He was in kindergarten with Anne and in class 5B of Sixth Montessori School. In the 1935 preschool photo Jan is de boy with small boy with glasses, second to the left of the teacher in the white blouse.[4]
After Sixth Montessori School, Wiegel attenede the Montessori Lyceum.[5] Following that he studied political and social sciences in Amsterdam, worked as a screen writer and produced over thirty documentay films, including De klas (The class, 1969), a film about the preschool class he and Anne Frank were in. After the war it turned out that ten out of the thirtytwo children had perished in the concentration camps.[6]
With Rivierenbuurt - het gelijk van Berlage (Rivierenbuurt - Berlage was right, 1995), a posthumously released documentary, Wiegel produced a film about the neighbourhood he grew up in, about the atmosphere and events in the 1930s, the first residents and the arrival of Jewish refugees from Germany, the years of German occupation and the razzias that took place in this district.[7]
Jan Wiegel passed away in 1994, a few days before his 66th birthday. During the 1995 Dutch Film Festival, he was commmorated with a retrospective of his films.[8]
