Hugo van Rijn

Hugo van Rijn was a classmate of Margot Frank at the Jewish Lyceum.

Hugo Samuel van Rijn was a son of Gerard van Rijn and Dina Sophia Bertha Philippine van Gelder.[1] Hugo's parents were married in Amsterdam on 1 July 1920.[2] He had an older sister Carla Marguerite (1921-2016).[3] Hugo's father was a deputy director at the Amsterdamsche Bank.[4] His mother was a social worker at Het Apeldoornsche Bos, a Jewish psychiatric hospital. She worked in the Achisomog department, a care centre for children with intellectual disabilities.[5]

Hugo was a student at the Amsterdam Lyceum,[6] but because Jewish students and teachers were banned from attending regular schools from 1 September 1941, he had to transfer to the Jewish Lyceum. He went to class 4B2, which also included Margot Frank.[7] He worked for the Jewish Council in the special assignments department and therefore received a Sperre: a temporary exemption from deportation. His card in the Jewish Council's card catalogue states that he had poor health due to chronic intestinal complaints.[8] That is why he was not allowed to attend physical education classes.[9] Hugo's sister Carla studied at the Joodse Centrale voor Beroepsopleiding (Jewish Centrale voor Beroepsopleiding)[10] at Hemonylaan 27 in Amsterdam to become a midwife.[11]

On the night of 21-22 January 1943, Paedagogium Achisomog was evacuated together with the Apeldoornsche Bosch. 1,181 patients and 52 staff members were deported to Auschwitz and murdered.[12] However, Dina, Hugo's mother, was not among the victims. She had a Sperre because of her husband's position.[5] Hugo's father Gerard was secretary of the board at the Joodse Vereniging voor Verpleging en Verzorging (Jewish Association for Nursing and Care).[13]

Hugo may have tried to go into hiding,[14] but on 3 April 1943 he and his parents ended up in Westerbork. From there, they were transported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on 15 February 1944.[15] Hugo died there on 30 January 1945. His father died on 19 February 1945.[16] Hugo's mother survived Bergen-Belsen and returned to the Netherlands on 20 May 1945, after the liberation of the camp.[5] His older sister Carla survived the war by going into hiding.[11]
