Philip Cohensius

Philip Cohensius was the janitor of the Jewish Lyceum.

Anne Frank refers to Philip Cohensius "the caretaker."[1] Before that he was a painter for Public Works.[2] Although details are sketchy, it is highly likely that he was fired by the council due to his Jewish descent. Afterwards he became "janitor J Lyceum".[3] He maintained the preserved Absentenboek (Absentee book) from 1942.[4] Among former pupils, opinions about him were divided: one described him as a "gentleman",[5] another as "really nasty".[6]

Philip Cohensius was transported from Camp Westerbork to Auschwitz on 16 November 1943.[7]

Source personal data.[3] Address: Da Costakade 33-II, Amsterdam (changed in August '42 to Goeverneurkade).[3]
