Eefje de Jong
Eefje de Jong was a classmate of Anne Frank at the Jewish Lyceum.
Eva (Eefje) de Jong was a daughter of Salomon (Jack) de Jong (1903-1978)[1] and Schoontje de Vries (1906-1943).[2] Eefje's parents divorced on 14 February 1938, after her father had emigrated to the United States a few days earlier, on 8 February, arriving in New York City on 18 February.[3] There he was naturalised as a citizen in 1940 and took the name Jack.[4] In 1940 her mother remarried a man with the same name as her first husband: Salomon de Jong (1904-1944).[5]
Eefje attended the Deurlooschool in de Dintelstraat in Amsterdam.[6] When she finished primary school in 1941, she was enrolled at the Gemeentelijk Lyceum voor Meisjes (Municipal Lyceum for Girls) at Reinier Vinkeleskade 62, where she was supposed to start in the first year after the summer holidays.[7] However, because Jewish students and teachers were banned from attending regular schools from 1 September 1941, she had to transfer to the Jewish Lyceum. In the schoolyear 1941-'42 she was in class 1L2, which also included Anne Frank. In school year 1942-'43 she was in class 2B.[8] Anne thinks of her "as a wonderful girl (...). She is only twelve years old, but is quite a lady."[9] Eefje also attended Anne's birthday party on Sunday, 14 June 1942 and, along with Nanette van Praag Sigaar and Danka Zajde, gave her the book Goedemorgen, melkboer (Good morning, milk man) as a present.[10]
On 6 and 7 June 1943, two trains with Jewish children and their parents left Camp Vught for Westerbork.[11] Among them were Eefje de Jong, her mother and stepfather Salomon de Jong (1904-1944).[12] Eefje and her mother went on to Sobibor extermination camp on 8 June 1943. On board this infamous Kindertransport were 3017 people: men, women and children. They were murdered immediately upon arrival on 11 June 1943.[13] A few years ago, it turned out that someone miraculously had managed escaped the cruel fate of the children from Camp Vught.[14] Eefje's stepfather remained in Westerbork until he was deported to Auschwitz on 23 March 1944. He was probably murdered immediately upon arrival.[15]
