Erich Holländer
Erich Holländer was a cousin of Edith Frank
Erich Holländer was a cousin of Edith Frank-Holländer.[1] He was a son of Caroline 'Lina' Hollander (1869-1942),[2] a sister Edith's father. Caroline was married to her cousin Joseph Holländer (1871-1935),[2] a son of Moises Holländer, in his turn a brother of Abraham's father Benjamin. Just like his cousin and brother-in-law Abraham and his brother Benjamin, of the fiim B. Holländer & Söhne in Stolberg, Josef owned a compnay that traded in scrap iron, steel and other metals, steam boilers, machins and other equipment.
Lina and Joseph Holländer initially lived in Eschweiler-Röthgen, where their six children – Irma, Erich, Henriette, Dina (Ilse), Eugen and Elsbeth – were born.[3] Around 1905 the family moved to Aachen.
The Aachen Standesamt declared on 19 May 1934 that Erich Holländer and Ilse Grünberg intended to marry.[4] The groom lived in Vaals and the bride in Aachen.[5] The marriage remained childless.
After the death of his father Josef in 1935, his company fell into the hands of Erich, but the company was closed down in March 1937. In 1937, he started his own company, N.V. IJzerwerk (Ironworks Ltd.) in Spekholzerheide near Heerlen in Limburg.[4]
In August 1942, the Holländer couple was called up for labour. They managed to escape by going into hiding.[6]
In autumn 1944, the south of the Netherlands was liberated. The whole IJzerwerk company was gone, but Erich Holländer rebuilt everything "from the ground up".[7] In 1948 he obtained Dutch nationality.[8]
His company manufactured, among other things, packing irons and struts for the mining industry. It advertised with these in various magazines.[9] In 1968, mining company N.V. Laura en Vereeniging entered into a partnership with IJzerwerk.[10] The company then had two hundred employees. Erich Holländer remained a director.[11]
