Rie (Iet, Ietje) Swilllens was a month older than Anne Frank. She lived with her family at Zuider Amstellaan, the wide boulevard close to Merwedeplein. Anne often walked to school with her and Hanneli Goslar.[1] Ietje was enrolled by Preparatory School No. 51 on 16 August 1933,[2] then went on to the Sixth Montessori School and joined Anne in class 1B with Mr. Van Gelder. They remained classmates until the 1940-1941 school year.

Ietje had a autograph book in which Anne Frank wrote a verse on 3 May 1938.[3] She is in Anne Frank's tenth-birthday photo taken on 12 June 1939 at Merwedeplein. Happily the girls pose for the photo: Lucie van Dijk, Anne Frank, Sanne Ledermann, Hannah Goslar, Juultje Ketellapper, Kitty Egyedi, Mary Bos, Ietje Swillens and Martha van den Berg.[4] While Anne went to the Jewish Lyceum in the late summer of 1941, non-Jewish Ietje went to the Municipal Lyceum for Girls, and the girls lost sight of each other.[5]

In 1947, Ietje passed her final exam at the Amsterdam Girl's Lyceum. She began studying psychology and obtained her bachelor's degree,[6] but broke off her studies after she married Johan Christiaan Helbing on 20 February 1954. They had three children together: two sons and a daughter.[7] Their youngest son Paul also went to the Sixth Montessorischool from 1969 to 1975.[8]

Ietje resumed her studies in the 1970s and, following graduation, worked as a vocational teacher.[9] Her marriage to Helbing ended in divorce in 1980.[7]

Rie Swillens passed away in 2001, 77 years old.
