Maurits Mossel

Maurits Mossel was in kindergarten of the Sixth Montessori School together with Anne Frank.

Maurits Mossel was a son of Aaron Mossel (1908-1943) and Reine Mouw (1907-1942).[1] Maurits' father was an optician by profession;[2] his mother was a seamstress.[3] They were married on 19 December 1928 in Amsterdam. Maurits was the eldest of three children; Henny (1930) and Sal (1932) were his younger sister and brother.

Mauirits was enrolled by Preparatory School No. 51 on 7 June 1935.[4] In the 1935 photograph of the kindergarten class, Maurits is the little boy with his arms crossed, diagonally right in front of Anne Frank. Anne is in the back centre, in a white dress.[5] After the Sixth Montessori School, Maurits went to the Jewish Montessori School on Daniël Willinkplein.[6]

On 2 and 3 October 1942, the Germans deployed all possible men plus the entire Amsterdam police force for the largest raid in Amsterdam and the province up to that time. This included the Mossel family.[7] Together with his parents, sister and little brother, Maurits Mossel was put on a transport from Westerbork to Auschwitz on 26 October 1942, where they were murdered on 29 October 1942.[8]

Maurits Mossel is commemorated on a plaque hanging in the hall of the 6th Montessori School Anne Frank.[9]
