Salomon Philipse
Salomon Philipse was a classmate of Anne Frank at the Sixth Montessori School.
Salomon (Sally) Philipse was a son of Samson Philipse (1899-1943) and Elisabeth Aldewereld (1898-1943).[1] They were married in Amsterdam on 25 September 1918.[2] Sally had an older sister Cornelia (1919-1943).[3] His father was a merchant in bicycle parts.[4]
On 17 August 1934, Sally was enrolled at Preparatory School No. 51.[5] In the August 1934 class photo of Anne Frank's kindergarten class, he is the boy with the chequered tie, sitting on the front right.[6] Two weeks later, in September 1934, Sally started in the first class of the Sixth Montessori School.[7] In the school years 1935-'36 through 1938-1939 and in the school year 1940-'41, he was in the same class as Anne Frank. In the 1936 class photo, he is the boy behind the aquarium.[8] In the 1938 class photo, he is the second from the left.[9] After the Sixth Montessori School, he was nominated to attend the 3-year Montessori ULO in 1941.[7]
During the German occupation, Sally's father Salomon worked for the luggage and order service of the Jewish Council. He obtained a Sperre (temporary reprieve from deportation) for his family through this position.[10]
Cornelia, Sally's sister, worked as an office clerk and later as a nurse. She married the stage actor Jules Jacob Weijl (also: Weyl) (1915-1943) on 2 September 1942.[11] He obtained a Sperre through his position as an announcer at the Hollandsche Schouwburg on Plantage Middenlaan in Amsterdam. This location was used by the German occupiers as a collection and deportation point, from where Jews were put on transport. On 21 October 1942, Jules moved in with his parents-in-law at 20-II Hoendiepstraat,[12] while Cornelia was registered at an address in Apeldoorn on the same day.[11]
Sally, his parents and his brother-in-law were rounded up during the razzia on 20 June 1943 and deported to Camp Westerbork. On 13 July 1943, they were put on transport to Sobibor extermination camp, where they were murdered immediately upon arrival on 16 July 1943.[13] Of the 1988 men, women and children aboard this eighteenth transport, none would survive the extermination camp.[14] Sally's sister was rounded up on 26 August 1943 and deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz on 31 August 1943. There she was murdered on 3 September 1943.[11]
