Elisabeth (Lies, Liesbeth) Brilleman was the daughter of Juda Brilleman (1903-1995)[1] and Sophie Brilleman-Soesan (1905-1965).[2] She grew up as an only child in Amsterdam in a secular Jewish family. She went to the Montessori kindergarten in the Corellistraat.[3] Her primary school was initially the First Montessori School, but on 20 April 1936 she was transferred to the Sixth Montessori School.[4] This coincided with the move from the Cornelis Schuijtstraat to the Merwedeplein.[1]

At the Sixth Montessori School, Lies was in Anne Frank's class from Year 3 to Year 6. She didn't have much contact with Anne and has said she only remembered her 'vaguely'. Lies found her to be "bossy" and "simply not a nice girl.”[5] Lies was friends with Bep van Groot Battavé and Lettie de Levie.[6] Like Hanneli Goslar, she remembered a visit to the exhibition The Train 1839-1939 on Frederiksplein: "We went there with the whole class and then you could ride around in a little steam train, yes."[7]

On 12 July 1941, the school deregistered her on her transfer to the Montessori ULO.[4] But because of the anti-Jewish educational segregation, she had to go to a Jewish MULO in the Transvaal district.[8]

Her parents managed to find a hiding address for her with a family at Terrasweg 61 in Santpoort. They themselves went into hiding in Velsen-Noord and later in Zaandam. After more than two years, shortly after her seventeenth birthday, she was arrested on 1 March 1945 when her ‘foster father’ Dirk Jan van Rijswijk was arrested for resistance activities. He was taken to Amsterdam and executed at the Amsteldijk on 8 March 1945.[9] Lies ended up in the House of Detention on Amstelveenseweg. After some time, she was released.[10]

After the liberation, she found her parents again in Zaandam, where they had been in hiding. The reunited family continued to live there. In December 1956, Lies married Frederik Kamst[11] and found work at the head office of supermarket chain Albert Heijn.[12]
