Sam Salomon
Sam Salomon was a classmate of Anne Frank at the Jewish Lyceum.
Samuel (Sam) Salomon was a son and only child of Henri Salomon and Heintje Blom.[1] His father was a textiles merchant.[2] In the 1930s, H. & S. Salomon, a company trading in manufactures, stockings and socks, was located at Sarphatipark 18-20. The partners Henri Salomon and (his father?) Samuël Salomon had previously traded in manufactures at the market in Westerstraat.[3] Later, they established themselves with their store at Sarphatipark.
In or about 1935, Sam spent some time in children's convalescent home Huis ter Duin in Egmond aan Zee. What was wrong with him is as yet unknown, but he came back a whole lot better. His family sent a letter thanking the director and staff for taking good care of Sam.[4]
In 1941, Sam was enrolled at the HBS secondary school at Jozef Israëlskade 45 in Amsterdam, where he was to start in the first year after the summer holidays.[5] Because Jewish students and teachers were banned from attending regular schools from 1 September 1941, he had to transfer to the Jewish Lyceum. In the schoolyear 1941-'42 he was in class 1L2, which also included Anne Frank.[6] In het diary Anne writes that Sam was one of her admirers, but characterizes him in rather unflattering terms.[7] In the story Do You Remember? she writes how he always followed her on his bicycle and wanted walk arm in arm with her.[8]
Sam, together with his parents, was deported to Westerbork on 9 September 1942, and from there to Auschwitz on 11 September,[9] where he and his mother were murdered immediately upon arrival on 14 September 1942.[10] His father ended up in Camp Seibersdorf, where he perished on 31 March 1943.[11]
Digitaal Joods Monument features a few photos of Sam Salomon and his parents.[12]
