Jan Gerrit Enno van Gelder
Van Gelder was a teacher of Anne Frank at the Sixth Montessori School.
Jan Gerrit Enno van Gelder was a member of the Van Gelder family, a dynasty best known for its paper mills.[1] He was a son of Jan Gerrit van Gelder (1850-1917), director of a Secondary Technical School, and Henriette Antonia Boeken (1856-1929), an older sister of Dr. H.J. Boeken, a classicist who became best known as a poet from the circle of the Tachtigers (Eightiers). Van Gelder grew up in a large family of seven children. One of his brothers was historian Herman Arend Enno van Gelder.[2]
Anne left kindergarten on 13 July 1935. After the summer vacation, on 16 August, she entered elementary school in class 1B under the care of Mr Van Gelder. Van Gelder would remain Anne's teacher for four years.[3] Anne stands next to him in a 1938 class photo.[4] Former student Freek de Groot is also in that photo, although according to him, Anne was not stuck in his class. According to Freek, Van Gelder was a fine story-teller and allowed the children to choose freely what subject matter they wanted to study when they came in in the morning.[5]
Many years later, Van Gelder could still remember most of the children in his class vividly.
"Annelies was certainly not a remarkable child then. Her achievements were above average, but she was always exceptionally calm. I never had any difficulties with her. She cuuld draw very nicely, in other subjects she showed great diligence and understanding. Of course she sometimes composed a little essay, but well, at that age children are still too young to see any genius in them. (...) She was never a playful child. (...) She was always really busy and she always wanted - this was always very remarkable in her - to know everything in detail. When something had been explained to the class, she always asked for further clarification; she was not satisfied until she understood the matter completely and she had made herself completely familiar with it."[6]
Van Gelder had married Adriana Henriëtte Scheffer in Amsterdam on 1 April 1926,[7] who was a laboratory assistant by profession.[8] She was a Communist and was listed in a 1939 register of left-wing extremists.[9] The divorce was pronounced on 26 April 1938, after which he remarried Agnes Erna Kähler from Eschweiler in Germany.[7] At the beginning of the 1939-'40 school year, Van Gelder opted for secondary education and transferred to the Montessori ULO.
In June 1947 Otto Frank gave him a copy of the first edition of Het Achterhuis with an accompanying note.[10]
