Martin Jacob Premsela

Martin Jacob Premsela taught French at the Girls' Lyceum and the Jewish Lyceum.

Martin Premsela began his career as a French teacher at the Gymnasium and Rijks-HBS in Zwolle, then at the Municipal Lyceum for Girls in Amsterdam[1] and since 1931 at the Vossius Gymnasium.[2] Because of his Jewish background, his employment there was terminated in 1941, after which he found work at the Jewish Lyceum.[3]

Apart from teaching French, he was also a certified translator.[2] He translated books for Meulenhoff publishers, including 'es hommes passerènt… by Marcelle Capy. He gave Anne Frank, Hanneli Goslar and Stella Lek private lessons once a week.[4] A lesson with a cheating incident is described in Anne's story Do You Remember?.[5]

In 1943 Prmesela went into hiding. At a staff meeting in the spring of 1943, Premsela was reported as one of the teachers absent "due to circumstances."[6] He managed to survive the war and afterwards was able to resume his classes at the Vossius Gymnasium.[2]
