Jopie de Beer

Jopie de Beer was a classmate of Anne Frank at the Jewish Lyceum.

Joseph (Jopie) de Beer was een zoon van Louis de Beer en Sara Roco.[1] His father was a textiles merchant.[2]

In 1941, Jopie was enrolled at the HBS secondary school at Jozef Israëlskade 45 in Amsterdam, where he was to start in the first year after the summer holidays.[3] However, because Jewish students and teachers were banned from attending regular schools from 1 September 1941, he had to transfer to the Jewish Lyceum. In the schoolyear 1941-'42 he was in class 1L2, which also included Anne Frank. In school year 1942-'43 he was in class 2B.[4] In her diary Anne characterizes him as mad about girls.[5]

Father Louis was granted a Sperre, a temporary reprieve from deportation, because of his position with the Jewish Cuoncikl as 'advisor for Social Affairs'.[6] Herman, Jopie's older brother also had a Sperre because of his position as carer of poor people. His card in the Jewish Council's card catalogue also features the annotation Estafette Lijnb.grt. Estafette was a department of the Jeish Council that performed all kinds of manual and small jobs, such as courier services. It consisted mainly of young people. The annotation was later crossed out. It further notes that he was ‘insolent’ and ‘very negative’ and no longer worked for the Jewish Council.[7]

It appears that the family was trying to escape deportation by arranging Honduran papers.[8] Honduran passports were in high demand because it was supposed to offer protection, but in spite of this, the members of the De Beer family were deported to Westerbork.

Herman was put on a transport to Auschwitz on 21 September 1943, where he ended up in the Auschwitz-Monowitz labour camp (aka Auschwitz III) and persished on 14 January 1944.[9] Jopie and his mother followed on 16 November 1943 and were murdered immediately after arriving on 19 November.[10] On 21 November 1943, father Louis was also put on transport to Auschwitz, where he was killed on 31 March 1944.[2]
