Laurens Nieuwenburg (1871)
Laurens Nieuwenburg was the foster father of Miep Gies.
Laurens Nieuwenburg was born on 23 March 1871 in The Hague. He was a warehouse manager by trade and married Johanna Francina Moene in Leiden on 17 February 1897.[1] Their first son Laurens was born on 24 May 1897, but he died two months later on 13 August 1987.[2] Between 1898 and 1909, five children were born, four sons: Pieter (1898-1977), Johannes Franciscus (1902-1986), Laurens (1904-1959), Gerardus (1907-unknown) and one daughter: Catharina Maria (1909-1967).[3]
At the end of 1920, Hermine Santrouschitz (Miep Gies) from Vienna was admitted as a foster child to the family, who at that time were still living at Atjehstraat 19 in Leiden.[4] Her own memories of meeting the family Nieuwenburg-Moene and her first time in the Netherlands can be read in Herinneringen aan Anne Frank ('Memories of Anne Frank').[5] She had a good relationship with her foster parents. According to her, Laurens Nieuwenburg was 'very caring, my godfather was very proud of me. He always said: 'I have two daughters.''[6]
On 19 May 1924, the family moved to Amsterdam. Miep lived with her foster parents until she went to live with Jan Gies in December 1940, whom she married six months later on 16 July 1941. Her foster father was one of the witnesses at their wedding.[7] One of the surviving wedding photographs shows Laurens and probably Johanna together with their granddaughter Irene Nieuwenburg,[8] the eldest daughter of their son Johannes Franciscus Nieuwenburg.[9]
Miep's foster parents are mentioned briefly by Anne Frank in her diary, when she writes about a search of their home on 6 October 1942.[10] At that time, Laurens and Johanna were living with their daughter and Jewish son-in-law Simon Zilverberg at Deurloostraat 92 II.[11] Nothing further is known about this home search.
