"content": "<p>Richard Huestis was an American diplomat. In <strong>1930 </strong>he was appointed vice-consul of the United States in Calcutta,<sup data-footnote-id=\"9rfke\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> and in <strong>1933 </strong>in Kingston, Jamaica.<sup data-footnote-id=\"qz3tr\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup> In <strong>1935</strong> he was recognised by Royal Decree as vice-consul of the United States in Rotterdam, for the provinces of South-Holland, Zeeland, North-Brabant and Limburg.<sup data-footnote-id=\"ig6b5\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup> In <strong>July 1938 </strong>he was reappointed by Royal Decree as consul for the same provinces.<sup data-footnote-id=\"rqy6b\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>On <strong>25 April 1939 </strong>he signed a return receipt for the emigration application for the United States of Hermann van Pels and his family.<sup data-footnote-id=\"c512v\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>During the fighting in Rotterdam on <strong>13 May 1940</strong>, Huestis put up several American citizens and consular personeel in his home.
