"content": "<p>Max Stoppelman was the son of Rien Stoppelman-van der Reis, the landlady of Jan and Miep Gies. He met up with Peter van Pels in Auschwitz.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Stoppelman was a trader in ready-to-wear clothes.<sup data-footnote-id=\"jslgb\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> He married Esther Delden on <strong>10 December 1941</strong>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"e9fpi\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup> Max and Stella wrote to his father Arond Stoppelman in London in <strong>August '41</strong> that they would wait for his return before marrying.<sup data-footnote-id=\"q7i6h\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup> Max Stoppelman worked as a relay worker at the Jewish Council, and managed to get himself and some others false blocked numbers.<sup data-footnote-id=\"1jjvz\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>On <strong>25 October 1943</strong>, he wrote to his father: "It is a dreadful thing for us to get through. Only a few will succeed."<sup data-footnote-id=\"d4fbg\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>From late <strong>1943 </strong>he was in hiding with the Adriani family on Hoefloo in Laren, where his wife and sister-in-law had already been staying for a few months.<sup data-footnote-id=\"lwqcb\"><a href=\"#footnote-6\" id=\"footnote-marker-6-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[6]</a></sup> On <strong>12 April 1944 </strong>they were arrested there and taken to Amsterdam the next day..<sup data-footnote-id=\"vcnt2\"><a href=\"#footnote-7\" id=\"footnote-marker-7-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[7]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Max's mother, Rien Stoppelman-van der Reis, wrote to her husband in London on <strong>1 May 1944</strong> via the Red Cross that: "12 April was the last thing that was left for me was to say, nothing more".<sup data-footnote-id=\"q3wxk\"><a href=\"#footnote-8\" id=\"footnote-marker-8-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[8]</a></sup> Together with the note in Anne's diary, this gave a good indication of the moment.<sup data-footnote-id=\"xc4ek\"><a href=\"#footnote-9\" id=\"footnote-marker-9-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[9]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>In Auschwitz, he met Peter van Pels, who told him that his mother, Rien Stoppelman-van der Reis, was still alive. He took Peter under his wing. On <strong>17 January 1945</strong>, Stoppelman was put on a transport.
