In <strong>1933</strong> a &#39;Depot Limburg&#39; of the Nederlandsche Opekta Mij. was located at Essers&#39; address in Heerlen.<sup data-footnote-id=\"hp23n\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>As a German, he served in the German army in the First World War. He lost the sight in both eyes because of the war.<sup data-footnote-id=\"xz47w\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup>&nbsp;In Aachen, he owned the business C. Essers &amp; Co., Mechanische B&uuml;rsten- und Pinselfabrik.<sup data-footnote-id=\"n5aji\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>In the Heerlen population register, he was listed as the representative of the &#39;fa. C. Essers en Co., Borstelfabr.&#39;&nbsp;in Aachen.<sup data-footnote-id=\"crhft\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup>&nbsp;In the Commercial Register, his company was listed as &#39;Trading in brushes and grinding and polishing equipment&#39;. The new trade name from <strong>October 1934</strong> was &#39;Cea-Mop&#39;&nbsp;factory.<sup data-footnote-id=\"n62ey\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup>&nbsp;This company manufactured floor wax and the tools required for its use. He also profited from the sale of Opekta.<sup data-footnote-id=\"xz47w\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-2\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Otto Frank noted down Esser&#39;s name and telephone number (4689) in his diary of <strong>1937</strong>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"zfzk1\"><a href=\"#footnote-6\" id=\"footnote-marker-6-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[6]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Esser&#39;s son (Herbert Joseph, <strong>1922</strong>) studied chemistry in Delft after secondary school. Because of his nationality he had to serve in the German army and was killed on <strong>22 August 1943</strong>. When the war front approached Heerlen, he and his wife left for Germany.<sup data-footnote-id=\"zytbh\"><a href=\"#footnote-7\" id=\"footnote-marker-7-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[7]</a></sup>&nbsp;Because he was seen as an enemy subject, the Nederlandsch Beheersinstituut confiscated his possessions.
