"content": "<p>Martin Brouwer was a butcher, and later a salesman and agent.<sup data-footnote-id=\"4k6u4\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> He was a representative of Gies & Co and in the <strong>spring of 1944</strong><strong> </strong>a supplier of food coupons. Other companies he represented included Nooitgedagt (butchers' workbenches) and Wierdensche Export Slachterij.<sup data-footnote-id=\"4k6u4\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-2\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Brouwer married E.G.W.J. Bakker on <strong>8 May 1929</strong>. Their daughter Hedwig was born on<strong> 29 May 1944</strong>;<sup data-footnote-id=\"p0ch9\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup> the child who, according to Anne's diary, was 'on the way'.<sup data-footnote-id=\"piv5q\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup> He traded in coupons, part of which went to the people in hiding in the Secret Annex.<sup data-footnote-id=\"0ip5k\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup> On <strong>7 March 1944</strong>, he was arrested at Zwolle station for clandestinely buying and selling ration coupons in collaboration with Hendrik Daatzelaar.<sup data-footnote-id=\"oqq0a\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup> The Zwolle police held him until <strong>22 March</strong>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"vc3em\"><a href=\"#footnote-6\" id=\"footnote-marker-6-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[6]</a></sup> In <strong>August 1944</strong>, the judge in Zwolle sentenced him to one month's imprisonment plus a fine of eight hundred guilders or eighty days, for trading in eight thousand illegal food coupons.<sup data-footnote-id=\"5cirl\"><a href=\"#footnote-7\" id=\"footnote-marker-7-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[7]</a></sup> </p>\r\n\r\n<p>When Kugler ended up in Zwolle during his imprisonment, he sought contact with Martin Brouwer.
