Fritz Pfeffer in refugee camp at Hook of Holland
In late 1938, the Dutch government decided that all men who had entered the country illegally between 9 November and 17 December that year had to go to a refugee camp in Hook of Holland. That is why Fritz Pfeffer also had to go there. He went back to Amsterdam after a few days.
Fritz Pfeffer was among those who came to the Netherlands during that period, but he did not cross the border illegally. Nevertheless, he was on a list drawn up on 19 December 1938, which included several hundred other names.[1] At the time the list was drawn up, Pfeffer had not yet been formally registered with the Amsterdam Aliens Department. Pfeffer's unwarranted stay in this refugee camp was short-lived. After only a few days, on 24 December 1938, he left the camp again, accompanied by an Amsterdam detective.[2]
