Johannes and Johanna Kleiman

According to Johannes Kleiman, Anne Frank regularly asked about his daughter.

Johannes Kleiman's daughter Johanna (Jopie) was born in Amsterdam on 9 August 1927. On 27 May 1948, she married J.C. van den Broek.[1] Her husband died in autumn 2009.[2] The Kleiman family, consisting of Johannes (Jo), wife Johanna (Jo, later Joke) and daughter Johanna (Jopie, Jo), was also known as: Jo, Jo and Jo.[3]

According to Kleiman, Anne regularly asked about his daughter: "Even about my youngest daughter, whom Anne hardly knew, she always wanted to hear everything, whether she was already out of school, already working, already had a boyfriend, whether she played in a nice hockey club, whether there were often nice parties (...).'"[4] Kleiman brought two of his daughter's books for Anne: Else's baantjes ('Else's jobs') and Riek, de kwajongen ('Riek, the bad boy'). He told Jopie that they were for a sister of Bep Voskuijl.[5]

Mrs Kleiman occasionally visited the Secret Annex and told her that Jopie was on a hockey team with Jacqueline van Maarsen.[6] These stories made Anne all the more aware of her own limitations: "(...) and 'in the depths of despair' when, for example, Mrs. Kleiman comes by and talks about Jopie's hockey club, canoe trips, school plays and afternoon teas with friends. I don't think I'm jealous of Jopie, but I long to have a really good time for once and to laugh so hard it hurts."[7]

Anne simply called Jopie Keiman Jopie in the A and B versions. In the C version, Otto Frank continued Anne's pseudonym habit. He gave Jacqueline van Maarsen the name Jopie and Jopie Kleiman the name Corry.[8]

Johanna Kleiman went with her mother to the screening (premiere?) of the American film adaptation of the diary by George Stevens.[9] This was almost three months after her father's death. Following Otto Frank's death, she wrote a letter of condolence to Fritzi Frank.[10]
