Hermann's official name is Hermann van Pels.[1] Van Pels is a Dutch surname. Hermann van Pels's family was originally from Oude Pekela, Groningen.

When Anne Frank wrote the second version (the B version) of her diary, she wrote a list of the names she wanted to give the people in a book to be published later. She gave Hermann van Pels the name Hans van Daan.[2] In the first edition of The Secret Annex (1947), that became Mr van Daan.[3]

According to Anne, Auguste Van Pels used the pet name Putti for her husband.[4]
