Yvonne van Zuiden

Yvonne van Zuiden was een leerling van het Joods Lyceum.

Yvonne Eveline van Zuiden was the daughter of Salomon van Zuiden (1891-1942) and Margaretha Peereboom (1894-1943).[1] Her father was a textile salesman.[2] Yvonne had a two-year-older sister, Milea, born in 1925.[3]

Yvonne attended the HBS-3 for Girls in Euterpestraart (now Gerrit van der Veenstraat). Because Jewish students and teachers were banned from attending regular schools as of 1 September 1941, she had to transfer to the Jewish Lyceum. She only attended this school for a short time. Although she was initially admitted to class 2L of the Jewish Lyceum in October 1941,[4] a note from headmaster Elte shows that she was demoted to class 1L2, Anne Frank's class, in November 1941.[5] The reason for this was that she had not been promoted to the second class at the HBS. Her father disagreed with Elte's decision, as this would be the third time that Yvonne had been placed in the first class. He therefore decided to take her out of school and have her take private lessons for a course that would entitle her to take the third-class examination. As a result, Yvonne did not attend school after the holidays of December 1941.[6] It's unknown whether Yvonne did attend class 1L2 with Anne, if even for a short time. She is not mentioned by Anne in her diary.

It is unclear when Yvonne ended up in Westerbork. She and her father may have been arrested during the raid on 6 August 1942, as they were both transported to Auschwitz on 10 August 1942,[7] where they were murdered on 30 September 1942. Her mother and sister Milea were in hiding in Lunteren, where they were arrested on 23 October 1943 by officers H. Bitter and C.C. Hofman and taken to the police station in Ede.[8] From there, they were deported to Westerbork on 27 October 1943. Three weeks later, on 16 November 1943, they were transported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered immediately upon arrival on 19 November 1943.[9]
