Hans Pfeffer

Hans Pfeffer was a younger brother of Fritz Pfeffer.

Hans Pfeffer was the sixth and youngest child of Ignatz Pfeffer and Jeanette Pfeffer-Hirsch and a younger brother of Fritz Pfeffer.[1]

There are two known photos of him dating from 1912 and possibly also one photo showing him together with his two brothers Fritz and Ernst.[2]

When he maried his wife Louise/Liesel is unknown, but on 23 April 1932 their daughter Ellen was born.[3]

It's unclear when and how Hans and his family ended up in the United States. Probably they left Germany in November 1933.[1] According to a 1940 US census, the family lived in the town of Newark, New Jersey in 1935. Hans lived in the United States under the name Henry Pfeffer and found work as a porter in a department store.[4]

According to a 2015 obituary of his daughter Ellen Kusalba-Pfeffer, she came to the United States at the age of seven. This means that she would not have arrived there until 1939 or 1940.[5]

Hans was back in Germany in 1937, in that year he left Hamburg alone on the S.S. Manhattan to the United States, where he arrived in New York on November 19.[6] It is unclear whether his daughter was indeed still living in Germany at that time.

Hans passed away in Augustus 1966, his wife Louise in December 1984.[7]
