Vera Frank
Vera Frank was a classmate of Anne Frank in kindergarten and at the Sixth Montessori School.
Veronica (Vera) Jenny Frank was a daughter of Maurits Frank (1896-1943) and Rebecca Sluizer (1901-1943). They were married in Amsterdam on 1 May 1924.[1] Vera had a younger sister Jenny (1932-1943).[2] Her father was a bank clerk and her mother had worked as an office clerk. The family was liberal Jewish.[3] Vera had the same surname as Anne Frank, but they were not related.
Vera was enrolled by Preparatory School No. 51 on 16 September 1932.[4] In the photo from spring 1934 of Anne Frank's kindergarten class, Vera is the girl in the white dress, sitting in front of the row of cards with numbers on them. Anne gave her number 7 in this photo.[5] In a photo from August 1934, she is sitting in the back centre, to the left of the door. In September 1934.[6] Vera went to the Sixth Montessori School. In the school years 1937-'38 through 1940-'41, she was again in the same class as Anne. In the class photo from 1938, she is sitting left of centre, right next to a flowerpot.[7] After the Sixth Montessori School, Vera was supposed to go to the 3-year Montessori ULO in 1941.[8]
During the German occupation, Vera's father Maurits worked as a stenography teacher for the Jewish Council. Through this position he obtained a sperre: temporary respite from deportation for his family.[9]
Vera, her parents and sister Jenny were deported to Camp Westerbork on 25 May 1943. On 1 June 1943, they were put on transport to Sobibor extermination camp, where they were murdered immediately upon arrival on 4 June 1943.[10] Of the 3006 people, who were aboard this fourteenth transport to Sobibor, Jules Schelvis turned out to be the only survivor.[11] After his retirement, he published his war experiences (Within the gates: an authentic account of two years of German concentration camps 1943-1945) and wrote the standard work Sobibor extermination camp. In 1999, he founded the Sobibor Foundation.[12]
Veronica Jenny Frank is commemorated on a plaque hanging in the hall of the 6th Montessori School Anne Frank.[13]
