    "content": "<p>Max van Pels was an older brother of Hermann van Pels. He had Dutch nationality and therefore had military service obligations in the Netherlands. On <strong>3 June 1914</strong>, he underwent an examination. Because of a fracture, the military authorities declared him unfit.<sup data-footnote-id=\"vqzmp\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>As co-owner of the firm Van Pels &amp; Wolff in Hamburg, he sold his shares to his &#39;Aryan&#39; business partner in <strong>early 1938</strong>. In <strong>1952</strong> he stated that this had happened of his own free will and that the business partner had also taken personal risks to help Van Pels to secure his property.<sup data-footnote-id=\"4shue\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>In <strong>March 1938</strong>, Max van Pels moved to Amsterdam. The population register listed his occupation as &#39;merchant in chemicals and drying kiln&nbsp;articles&#39;.<sup data-footnote-id=\"3tyea\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>On <strong>16 June 1938</strong>, he and his wife received certificates of good conduct in connection with emigration to North America<sup data-footnote-id=\"fub71\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup>&nbsp;and on <strong>27 August</strong> they left on board the <em>S.S. Samaria</em> from Liverpool.
