Henoch Rajgrodski
Henoch Rajgrodski was a classmate of Margot Frank at the Jewish Lyceum.
Henoch Rajgrodski was a son of Zalkind Rajgrodski (1894-1943) and Szejne Raczewski (1895-1943).[1] His parents were from Suwalki, a town in north-eastern Poland, but Henoch was born in Königsberg (now: Kaliningrad) Henoch's father was a manufacturer of men's clothing and settled in Amsterdam in October 1931.[2] Henoch and his mother followed in November 1932.[1] On 19 July 1935, his younger sister Mirjam was born.[3]
Henoch was a student at the First HBS secondary school at Keizersgracht 177 in Amsterdam.[4] As Jewish students and teachers were banned from attending regular schools from 1 September 1941, he had to go to the Jewish Lyceum in Amsterdam. He was in class 4B2, which also included Margot Frank.[5]
Because of his job for the Jewish Council, Zalkind and his family were granted a Sperre, a temporary exemption from deportation, but in May 1943 there was a new wave of deportations of Jews from Amsterdam. Zalkind, Szejne and daughter Mirjam ended up in Westerbork on 26 May 1943.[6] They were deported to Sobibor extermination camp on 1 June 1943, where they were murdered immediately upon arrival on 4 June 1943.[7] There were 3006 people on board this fourteenth transport to Sobibor. Jules Schelvis was the only survivor of this transport.[8]
Henoch managed to flee to Switzerland a few months earlier. From 8 February 1943, he stayed in a refugee camp in Bourrignon, in the north-west of Switzerland.[9] According to his card in the Jewish Council's card catalogue, he eventually moved to the religious kibbutz Tirat Zvi, in Palestine.[10]
