"content": "<p>Else Leeser-Röttgen was the first child of Leo Röttgen and Rosa Röttgen-Rosenau and the oldest sister of Auguste van Pels-Röttgen. On <strong>17 May 1920</strong> she married Dr. med. Julius Leeser<strong> </strong>in Elberfeld.<sup data-footnote-id=\"ze72e\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> He was born on <strong>5 August 1885 </strong>in Bickern, later a part of the town Wanne-Eickel. Together they had two sons, Helmut (Hal) <strong>(15 May 1923) </strong>and Rolf (Ralph) Manfred <strong>(19 May 1925)</strong>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"oscc2\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>After their marriage they lived in Wanne-Eickel, where Else became a member of the <em>Israelitischer Frauenverein</em> and was its chairwoman in the <strong>early 1930s</strong>. In <strong>1938</strong> they moved to Essen.<sup data-footnote-id=\"nt9mn\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Because of the Nazi persecution in Germany, Else and Julius fled on <strong>21 January 1939 </strong>with their son Rolf via Vlissingen to the United States, where they arrived in New York on <strong>3 February 1939</strong>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"egp73\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup> Their eldest son Helmut was already living in Washington D.C. at that time.
