            "content": "<p>After the end of the First World War hunger and deprivation prevailed in parts of Europe. Thanks to the work of aid organisations, thousands of children, mainly from Hungary and Austria, temporarily came to the Netherlands to recuperate in host families. Hermine Santrouschitz, better known as Miep Gies, was one of them.<sup data-footnote-id=\"y92uu\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> She had lived in Vienna since birth and was one of many children in need there.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>According to a statement by the &#39;Central Committee for the Care of Austrian Workers&#39; Children in the Netherlands, sub. com Leiden&#39;,&nbsp;Hermine Santrouschitz, better known as Miep Gies, came to&nbsp;Leiden on <strong>12 November 1921</strong> under the care of the L. Nieuwenburg family.<sup data-footnote-id=\"pjrjw\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>However, according to a later statement, Miep had arrived a year earlier, on <strong>17 December 1920</strong>, from Austria at the home of Laurens Nieuwenburg in Leiden.<sup data-footnote-id=\"bz237\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup>&nbsp;On <strong>13 December 1920</strong>, a doctor from the State Health Inspection Service in Vienna declared that she should be permitted to stay in the Netherlands due to her state of health.<sup data-footnote-id=\"k81i2\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup>&nbsp;Miep was registered in the Population Register of Leiden as of <strong>1 January 1921</strong> at the address Atjehstraat 19.<sup data-footnote-id=\"wf40p\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup><br />\r\n<br />\r\nHer own memories of the journey and the first time in the Netherlands can be read in <em>Herinneringen aan Anne Frank </em>(&#39;Memories of Anne Frank&#39;).<sup data-footnote-id=\"47b8f\"><a href=\"#footnote-6\" id=\"footnote-marker-6-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[6]</a></sup> Miep recounts, among other things, that the eldest son of the foster family,&nbsp;Pieter Nieuwenburg, was at a preparatory teacher training college&nbsp;and spoke a little German. He became her interpreter.<sup data-footnote-id=\"exozi\"><a href=\"#footnote-7\" id=\"footnote-marker-7-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[7]</a></sup><br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn the Leidsch Dagblad of <strong>14 April 1921 </strong>there was a competition in which Miep and her new foster sister Cato Nieuwenburg participated. Nieuwenburg.<sup data-footnote-id=\"pjrjw\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup>&nbsp;Maar volgens een latere verklaring arriveerde&nbsp;Miep echter een jaar eerder, op <strong>17 december 1920</strong>, vanuit Oostenrijk bij het gezin van Laurens Nieuwenburg in Leiden.<sup data-footnote-id=\"bz237\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup>&nbsp;Een arts van de&nbsp;dienst Staatstoezicht op de Volksgezondheid verklaarde&nbsp;op <strong>13 december 1920 </strong>in Wenen dat haar gezondheidstoestand verblijf in Nederland toeliet.<sup data-footnote-id=\"k81i2\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup>&nbsp;Miep werd&nbsp;per <strong>1 januari 1921 </strong>in het Bevolkingsregister van Leiden ingeschreven op het adres Atjehstraat 19.<sup data-footnote-id=\"wf40p\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>Haar eigen herinneringen aan de reis en de eerste tijd in Nederland zijn te lezen in <em>Herinneringen aan Anne Frank</em>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"47b8f\"><a href=\"#footnote-6\" id=\"footnote-marker-6-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[6]</a></sup> Miep vertelde&nbsp;hierin onder meer dat de oudste zoon van het pleeggezin, Pieter Nieuwenburg, op een kweekschool zat en een beetje Duits sprak.
