"content": "<p>On <strong>15 March 1931</strong> Otto and Edith Frank took over the tenancy agreement that the current tenant had made with the owner of the ground floor flat less than a year before.<sup data-footnote-id=\"r31vr\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> The family was registered at this address ten days later.<sup data-footnote-id=\"vxof3\"><a href=\"#footnote-2\" id=\"footnote-marker-2-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[2]</a></sup> Margot was five years old, Anne just over eighteen months.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>A few surviving photographs show something of family life at this address. One photo shows Anne and Edith in the garden.<sup data-footnote-id=\"iy5az\"><a href=\"#footnote-3\" id=\"footnote-marker-3-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[3]</a></sup> Two others show Anne in the garden with Margot and an otherwise unknown friend, Grace.<sup data-footnote-id=\"9ncte\"><a href=\"#footnote-4\" id=\"footnote-marker-4-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[4]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>The economic crisis hit the family hard in business terms. On <strong>27 December 1932,</strong> Otto and Edith Frank wrote to the landlord that they had to give notice to terminate the rent on <strong>31 March 1933 </strong>"in view of the changed economic situation<em>" </em>.<sup data-footnote-id=\"r31vr\"><a href=\"#footnote-1\" id=\"footnote-marker-1-2\" rel=\"footnote\">[1]</a></sup> On <strong>25 March 1933 </strong>the council transferred the family's registration to Dantestrasse 4, the house where Otto's mother was still living at the time.<sup data-footnote-id=\"r9qy5\"><a href=\"#footnote-5\" id=\"footnote-marker-5-1\" rel=\"footnote\">[5]</a></sup></p>\r\n\r\n<p>On the occasion of Anne Frank's 28th birthday on <strong>12 June 1957</strong>, the city of Frankfurt placed a plaque on the façade of the house with the text:<br />\r\n<em>'In diesem Haus lebte Anne Frank, geboren 12.6.1929 in Frankfurt am Main. Sie starb als Opfer der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung 1945 im KZ-Lager Bergen-Belsen. Ihr Leben und Sterben — Unsere Verplichtung. "content": "<p>When Edith Frank and Otto Frank moved to Ganghoferstrasse 24 in <strong>March 1931</strong>, the family's economic situation had deteriorated. Late <strong>December 1932</strong>, Otto Frank gave notice of cancelling the lease on Ganghoferstrasse as of <strong>31 March 1933</strong> "as a result of the changed economic circumstances", as stated in the surviving termination letter.
